Steadyworks

Research InternCAD and Physical AI

San Francisco Bay Area·$7k – $10k / month · 10–16 weeks, full time

Do hands-on engineering in CAD, simulation, and fabrication while helping shape how AI learns to design and build physical things.

About Steadyworks

Steadyworks is a data research lab powering the next generation of AI. We partner with frontier AI labs to build expert-grade datasets, reinforcement learning environments, and evaluation infrastructure that improve state-of-the-art models. Our team previously built frontier AI systems at Meta, Google Research, Autodesk, and other leading organizations.

About the role

This 10–16 week, full-time fellowship, based in our Bay Area office, is for students, recent graduates, and early-career engineers who want hands-on experience at a fast-growing AI startup. Fellows work alongside our engineers and researchers, applying real engineering skills to frontier AI problems. You'll have significant ownership from day one. We're a small, collaborative team that values curiosity, multidisciplinary thinking, and shipping high-quality work quickly.

What you'll work on

  • Design CAD models of real-world systems, from complex multi-part mechanisms to multi-floor MEP layouts
  • Set up and run FEA and other simulations, and document the results
  • Prepare parts for 3D printing and fabricate test pieces to validate designs
  • Review designs for manufacturability (DFM) and document the reasoning behind each decision
  • Turn engineering workflows into structured tasks, reference solutions, and grading criteria for AI training
  • Check datasets for accuracy and consistency before they ship to our partners

Who you are

  • A student or recent graduate in mechanical engineering, robotics, manufacturing, or a related field
  • Proficient in at least one CAD tool (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Siemens NX, or similar)
  • Familiar with FEA or simulation tools and with the basics of design for manufacturing
  • Hands-on with fabrication: 3D printing, machining, sheet metal, or building your own projects
  • Detail-oriented and able to explain your engineering decisions

Nice to have

  • Python scripting or code-based CAD (CadQuery, CAD APIs)
  • Experience with GD&T, CAM, or production drawings
  • Robotics or maker projects you can show
  • Experience using Opus, GPT, Gemini and AI CAD tools in your engineering work

Why Steadyworks

You'll do real engineering work that directly shapes how frontier AI models learn to design, simulate, and build physical things. Fellows get close mentorship, direct exposure to AI research, and a portfolio of work that goes well beyond a typical internship.

How to apply

Email careers@steadyworks.ai with anything that shows your work: a portfolio, CAD models, project photos, or a write-up of something you built.
